Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the effect of copper on the fibrosis in rat liver. Sprague-Dawley rats were daily administered with copper sulfate (10 mg/kg B.W.) for 2 months intraperitoneally and Ito cells and transformed Ito cells in the liver lobule were observed with TEM.
1. In the control group, Ito cells have many large and small lipid droplets in their cytoplasm.
2. In the copper treated group, lipid droplets of Ito cell were severely reduced and their appearance was transitional type that was similar to fibroblast.
3. Basal lamina-like structure was observed in the periphery of transformed Ito cell and intercellular spaces in the copper treated group.
4. Microfilaments, electron dense bodies, pinocytic vesicles and cell junctions with hepatocytes were observed both Ito cells and transformed Ito cells.
